Synapse on Mac

Razer Synapse MacBook: Does Yours Qualify?

If you searched “Razer Synapse MacBook”, the answer is in About This Mac: your chip and your macOS version. Razer Synapse for Mac is a Preview, and Razer's FAQ says it needs Apple Silicon and macOS 15 or later, so some MacBooks qualify and some do not.

Razer Synapse MacBook or Razer Synapse for Mac?

Both searches lead to the same app. Razer's official app for the Mac is Synapse for Mac, and its FAQ sets the requirements by chip and macOS version, not by Mac model. A MacBook follows the same rule as any other Mac: Apple Silicon and macOS 15 or later. Razer still labels the app a Preview, so its Synapse for Mac page is the place to confirm the current requirements before you install.

The model name alone does not settle it. What counts is the chip and the macOS version, and your MacBook shows both in under a minute.

Check your MacBook before installing Razer Synapse for Mac

Open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. Two lines matter here: the chip (Apple M and a number on Apple Silicon, or an Intel processor) and the macOS version. Compare them with these three cases:

  • Apple chip and macOS 15 or later: your MacBook matches Razer's FAQ.
  • Apple chip and an earlier macOS, such as 13 or 14: outside the requirements until it runs macOS 15 or later.
  • Intel processor: outside the requirements on any macOS version.

The same check works on desktop Macs too. For the wider picture, read Does Razer Synapse work on Mac?

Razer Synapse Mac Intel: what an Intel MacBook can use

Looking for Razer Synapse Mac Intel support on an Intel MacBook? Razer's FAQ asks for Apple Silicon, so an Intel MacBook is outside the Preview's requirements whatever macOS it runs. A software update changes the macOS version, never the chip.

Your lights still have options. RGB Studio is a universal app that runs on Intel and Apple Silicon from macOS 13 Ventura, and OpenRGB is multiplatform. Both are covered below.

Razer Synapse Mac Sonoma or Razer Synapse Mac Ventura?

Those two searches are about the macOS version. On an Apple Silicon MacBook with macOS 14 Sonoma or macOS 13 Ventura, the chip matches Razer's FAQ and the system does not, because the FAQ asks for macOS 15 or later. On an Intel MacBook, neither one matches.

Updating is your decision. If you keep Sonoma or Ventura, the practical answer to “Razer Synapse Mac Sonoma” and “Razer Synapse Mac Ventura” is an app that supports the macOS you already have. RGB Studio runs from macOS 13, so your current system is enough for it.

USB-C ports, receivers and Bluetooth on a MacBook

One part of the Razer Synapse MacBook question has nothing to do with software: the ports. Many MacBooks only have USB-C ports. If your Razer mouse or keyboard has a USB-A cable, or its wireless receiver is USB-A, you need a USB-C adapter or a hub to plug it in. Sort that out first, because lighting software can only reach a device that is connected.

Bluetooth needs a note too. RGB Studio controls lighting through USB or the wireless USB receiver, not over Bluetooth. With a wireless model, keep its receiver plugged in, through the adapter if your MacBook only has USB-C.

Razer lighting on a MacBook without Razer Synapse for Mac

If your MacBook is outside Razer's requirements, or you want a different app, here are two options to look at.

RGB Studio, a Razer Synapse Mac alternative

RGB Studio is an independent Mac app, compatible with Razer devices and not made or endorsed by Razer. It is a universal app for Apple Silicon and Intel, runs on macOS 13 Ventura or later and costs a one-time US$ 8.79. There is no account and no driver to install: the app talks to the devices itself.

Its catalog has 120 Razer models: 49 mice, 42 keyboards, 5 headsets, 7 mouse pads and 17 other devices, among them the Razer Laptop Stand Chroma and Laptop Stand Chroma V2. Only the Razer Basilisk V3 and the Ornata V3 TKL have been verified on real hardware; the rest rely on known protocol data. Look up yours on the compatibility list, or on the Razer mouse on Mac and Razer keyboard on Mac pages.

Know the limits before you buy. It controls lighting only, with no DPI, macros or button remapping, and per-key keyboards are controlled by columns (zones), not key by key. It is a beta and not notarized yet, so on first launch you allow it in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway. You get 16 included profiles, up to 3 favorites, Start with macOS and one effect synced across your devices.

OpenRGB, free and open source

OpenRGB is free and open source, and its site says it runs on Windows, Linux and macOS, so it is multiplatform rather than built only for the Mac. The RGB Studio vs OpenRGB comparison puts the two side by side, and the comparison with Synapse for Mac does the same with Razer's app.

Razer Synapse MacBook questions

Does Razer Synapse for Mac run on every MacBook?

No. Razer's FAQ asks for Apple Silicon and macOS 15 or later, so it covers MacBooks with an Apple chip on macOS 15 or newer. An Intel MacBook, or an Apple Silicon MacBook on macOS 13 or 14, is outside those requirements. About This Mac shows both details.

Is there a Razer Synapse Mac Intel version for older MacBooks?

Razer's FAQ for Synapse for Mac lists Apple Silicon as a requirement, so an Intel MacBook is outside it. For any other Synapse version, check Razer's site before you spend time on it. RGB Studio runs on Intel MacBooks from macOS 13 Ventura, for lighting only.

Do I need an adapter for a Razer receiver on a MacBook?

If your MacBook only has USB-C ports and the receiver or cable is USB-A, yes: use a USB-C adapter or a hub. RGB Studio needs that USB connection to change the lights, since it does not control lighting over Bluetooth.

Is RGB Studio a Razer Synapse MacBook version?

No. RGB Studio is an independent app, compatible with Razer devices and not made or endorsed by Razer. If your MacBook is outside Razer's requirements, it is one way to control the lights from macOS 13 Ventura, on Intel or Apple Silicon.
